Behind The Lens
Stick Like Araldite At Cricket
PlayersVoice and Canon Australia have partnered for a five-part video series Behind The Lens, featuring Australia’s most respected sports photographers detailing how they captured some of the most iconic sports images ever taken, and the inner workings of their craft.
Canon Master photographer Phil Hillyard (News Corp) takes us into the inner sanctum of Australian sports photography to share the images you know, and the stories you don’t with Alex Coppel (News Corp), Cameron Spencer (Getty Images), Ryan Pierse (Getty Images), David Gray (Reuters) and Craig Golding (freelance).
In episode four of Behind The Lens, Hillyard and his peers discuss the biggest challenge of photographing Test cricket: gluing your bum to the chair all day, for five days, to get the best shot. After years on the tour, the photographers have also built friendships with the Australian players and joined the ‘cricket family’, but that doesn’t make it easier when the time comes to take a difficult photograph.
